New Test Boosts Pap Smear’s Accuracy

You might notice something a little bit different during your next visit to the gynecologist. Many gynecologists are now offering a new test—PapSure®—in conjunction with the standard Pap smear. Used together, these tests more than double the chance of detecting cervical cancer, compared to a Pap smear alone.

After a Pap smear, the cervix is washed with a mild vinegar solution and then examined by a physician using a small disposable blue light and magnifying lens. The light makes any abnormalities appear bright white, helping physicians make an accurate diagnosis. Studies show it can detect 99 percent of cervical cancers, compared to a Pap smear’s 50 percent detection rate.

“This test is a major advance in women’s health that’s long overdue,” says Gerard J. Pregenzer, MD, director of obstetrics and gynecology at Somerset Medical Center, who was one of the first in the region to offer the test. “Combined with an annual Pap smear, the PapSure can help us diagnose significantly more cases of cervical cancer and potentially save many more lives.”
